Who: We are all exposed to an ever increasing toxic environment that is practically inescapable. Whether it’s the air we all breathe, the food and water we ingest, or the industrial chemicals that are increasingly pervasive we are all at risk. The research is clear that exposure to various forms of xenobiotics are contributing factors to many of the conditions and diseases that devastate our communities. Considering the above it would seem that one could make an argument that every person should go through a “detoxification program” at least once, if not multiple times, per year. However, is this true? Is it effective? Can detoxification programs cause harm?
Why: As indicated above, research is clear that toxins, haptens, xenobiotics, etc. have the potential to damage our bodies through the dysregulation of important and crucial biological systems. Not only can these issues contribute to, if not cause, ill-health and disease, but they can also be a barrier for us to be able to restore function and return to homeostasis.
When: Most practitioners agree that “detoxification” or “metabolic clearing programs” are an essential part of patient care. However...How often should they be done?
How: There are many detoxification programs available to practitioners, however many of them are outdated and antiquated and thus do not provide a cutting edge approach that addresses the ever increasing complexity of patient toxicity. Most practitioners have heard of phase 1 and 2 detoxification pathways, but rarely do they understand the details that set them apart from their colleagues. Many practitioners have never heard or have a poor understanding of Phase 3 detoxification that will often lead to side effects of detoxification and poor results.
